Fringe S1E12

Notes for Fringe season 1, episode 12, “The No-Brainer

0:11 A few identifiable items on the desk of the first victim. A Logitech E3560 webcam, Apple iPod 4th Gen, a Palm Treo 700.

03:25 The microscope Walter using, is similar to a ones sold as BMT-404D-LED

07:30 A reference to floppy disks being knowingly outdated in 2009

07:30 Astrid suggests “the hard disk platters must be fused”. This isn’t a thing that happens with HDDs, so not something you’d suggest before opening the casing. (As opposed to a head crash, where the reading head collides with a spinning platter.)  “I know some pretty aggressive data retrieval techniques” …or you could contact a drive recovery specialist who might have a clean room?

08:20 “I was just IMing with Greg last night” I don’t think I’ve heard someone say “eye-em-ing” for many years now.

11:25 Astrid has opened the disk cases in the lab, and then mentioned how sensitive the disk surfaces are to dust?

11:34 “A huge file, 657MB”

12:00 People being genuinely surprised by a land-line ringing. Once, when the land-line rang in a previous house I was living, I’d assumed it was the fire alarm and rushed outside.

14:10 This is the only time we’ll ever see Peter’s underground computer contact, Akim. It’s hard to identify the devices in his back room, but his printer is an HP LaserJet 4200

14:30 Apparently the way to fix drives with destroyed platters is… just plug it in via SATA? Hacker magic?

16:18 We get a bunch of terminal output and visual traceroutes to fake IP addresses.

16:52 Olivia types “cross reference medical records” into the government search engine, which implies a highly sophisticated system in 2009.

17:40 Peter works out that someone has recreated Max Headroom’s blipverts – but on the Internet.

17:30 Olivia is now using a red BlackBerry Curve 8320

18:00 Olivia’s MacBook is apparently running Windows.

38:30 Olivia believes the suspect has killed three people, so she’s going to go into a dangerous situation alone so that Harris can’t make her look bad?

44:00 Harris points out that, by going in without backup, Olivia violated FBI protocol.  “Heartbreaking: The Worst Person You Know Just Made A Great Point
